The fabled Huia, mythic songbird of the deep forests of New Zealand. Every so often, reports come in that someone has seen or heard a Huia, but common belief is that they are lost to us forever. The female skull featured a beautiful long bill, as shown in this artwork. These strange and beautiful birds are the unicorns of New Zealand history.
Pictured with their former habitat’s foods and surrounding plants:
This series, titled I’m Gonna Love You Anyhow, is an emotive collection of watercolour portraits of the skulls of New Zealand’s extinct native birds. They are featured alongside the flowers, plants, and trees that remain in the regions of their former habitats.
